A 30-day plan

Write a novel in a month: a 30-day plan for 50,000 words

You can write a novel in a month if you treat it as thirty small sessions instead of one huge leap: about 1,667 words a day adds up to 50,000. Here is a week-by-week plan built around NovelGPT, for a November novel challenge or any 30 days you choose.

No sign-up. 1,000 free credits every month.

Step by step

  1. Day 1: set up the book

Type your premise, pick the length nearest 50,000 words and a story shape, and create the book. Approve People, Places & world and Plot the same day while the idea is hot.

  2. Days 2 and 3: plan the chapters

Generate the Chapter plan. For 50,000 words, think about 16 or 17 chapters of roughly 3,000 words. Add, drag or remove chapters until the count matches your goal.

  3. Week 1: draft at a steady pace

Aim for about 1,667 words a day. Draft chapters with AI, type them yourself, or mix the two; both live in one editor. The header shows each chapter's words against its target.

  4. Week 2: push through the middle

When a scene stalls, use Next scene for about 1,000 words or Finish chapter to reach the target. The Book map's tension row helps you spot a flat middle.

  5. Week 3: let memory carry the details

Story memory tracks each person's whereabouts and knowledge, so week-three details match week one. Open Promises to the reader and decide which setups to pay off before the ending.

  6. Week 4: finish, then check and polish

Write the ending by about day 26. Then run the free checks and a whole-book consistency check, and use the edit passes for the rough spots.

  7. Day 30: export

Save an EPUB, DOCX or PDF, and read the book in Reading mode. You finish with a complete first draft.

How to write a novel in a month: the maths of 50,000 words

Fifty thousand words over thirty days is 1,667 words a day. For many writers that is one or two focused sittings. Build in slack: if you take four days off, the target rises to about 1,900 words on the days you write, and a buffer makes a missed evening cost far less.

Progress shows your total words and the words still to go, and the Overview tab shows today's words, so you can check the count against the target each evening. Fifty thousand sits between NovelGPT's Short Novel length, about 40,000 words, and Medium Novel, about 70,000.

Using AI for a novel writing challenge without losing the plot

A challenge rewards speed, and speed is where continuity breaks: a name changes in week two, a secret leaks early. Story memory turns each chapter into a record of facts, open promises and a summary, and the AI is handed the relevant ones whenever it writes a chapter. Free checks flag name typos and timeline slips as you go, at no cost.

The AI is optional at every step. Some writers draft by hand in the morning and ask for a Next scene when the evening goes quiet; others draft whole chapters and spend the month editing. Either way, fresh AI text stays marked until you choose Undo or Keep, so you can look before it becomes part of your book.

What a month with AI costs on the Free plan

Read the limits before you begin. Free comes with 1,000 credits a month, and its AI drafting stops after chapter 3 of a book, while typing your own words costs nothing whenever you like. A month planned around mostly AI-drafted chapters will need a paid plan or purchased credits, and every action shows its price first so you can budget. Credit packs never expire.

Questions writers ask

Can I write a novel in a month with only an hour a day?

It is tight. At 1,000 words a day you would reach 30,000 words, which is novella length in NovelGPT, so a smaller target may suit you better. Alternatively, let the AI draft some chapters and spend your hour reading, steering and revising.

What if I fall behind?

Re-plan rather than quit. Merge or remove chapters in the Chapter plan so the finish line matches the words you can really write, because a shorter finished draft is worth more than a longer unfinished one.

Is 50,000 words a complete novel?

It is a short novel. Many writers treat the month as a complete first draft and expand or tighten it in revision. NovelGPT's lengths run from a novelette at about 12,000 words to a doorstopper at about 180,000.

Do I have to start on the first of November?

No. The plan is thirty days from whenever you begin. A November novel challenge adds company and a deadline, but the weeks work the same in any month.

Can I let the AI write the whole thing?

Within your plan's limits, yes. A book drafted that way still needs your reading and revising, so keep the last week for checks, and decide chapter by chapter which words stay.

Your next novel starts with one sentence.
