Characters with depth

An AI character generator for people with real depth

A character profile is only useful if it changes the story. This AI character generator builds people with wants, wrong beliefs and a voice, then follows them through every chapter you write.

How it works

  1. Set the cast size

In the setup, choose a Small cast of three, the usual number for your book's length, or a Large ensemble. The first pass plans up to ten people.

  2. Generate People

One tap creates the cast and the relationships between them together, as cards you can read and edit before approving.

  3. Deepen each person

Open a person for the basics, then Go deeper for wounds, backstory, voice and how they change. AI Assist lists each field beside what is already there and fills only the ones you accept.

  4. Connect them

Relationships have their own cards: how two people are connected, how they feel about each other, who has the upper hand and what is left unsaid.

  5. Write, and let memory follow

As chapters are written, Story memory records where each person is and what they know, and suggests newcomers it spots for your People list.

A character profile generator built on want, belief and need

Most character sheets ask for eye colour and a favourite food. The People cards open with three questions that drive scenes: what does this person want, which false idea do they hold, and what do they truly need? The gap between belief and need is where an arc comes from, and the AI uses it when it writes.

Each person also has a line about who they are, a look, fears and wounds, a backstory, a voice and a kind of change: they grow, stay steady, lose hope, fall or are corrupted. The basics come first and the craft fields wait behind Go deeper, with a count of how many you have filled.

A character creator for writers that remembers the cast

A profile on paper is a promise; with an AI character generator that keeps the cast in view, it becomes a tool. When a chapter is drafted, the people in it are handed to the AI with their state at the start of that chapter: where they are, what they have learned, what they carry. The AI is not meant to give someone knowledge they have not yet earned.

Free checks catch the plainest slips with no AI and no cost: a name misspelled by a letter, or a person who turns up after they have left the story. Rename someone once and the rename wizard counts every place the old name appears, in chapter plans, events, notes and the manuscript, then changes the ones you tick, with one Undo. The old name is kept as an alias.

A relationship map and character arcs you can follow

People has a List and a Web view for relationships. On a wide screen the web is a diagram you can pan and zoom; on a phone it shows one person's connections at a time. A slider shows the web as of any chapter, so you can see how things stood at chapter 12.

Each chapter can name whose eyes it is told through, and the Book map shows who appears where, so a hero who vanishes for ten chapters shows up as a gap. Story health also lists people who have been absent for six or more written chapters.

Questions writers ask

Can the AI character generator create a person from a one-line description?

Yes. Add one with AI takes a short instruction, shows the price, and returns an editable card with a name-clash check. Nothing is added to your book until you choose Add to story.

How many characters should a novel have?

It depends on length and genre. By default NovelGPT plans roughly three or four people for a novella and five to seven for a full novel, with Small cast and Large ensemble options, and never more than ten in one pass.

How does the app keep my characters consistent between chapters?

Story memory keeps a record, taken from each chapter you write, of who knows what and where everyone is. When a later chapter contradicts it, a check quotes both passages side by side and leaves the decision to you.

Can each character have a distinct voice?

Yes. Every person has a voice field under Go deeper, and it is part of what the AI is given about them when it writes. You decide what is on the page, because new text arrives for you to keep or undo.
