For mystery and thriller

An AI mystery writer that tracks every clue to its payoff

A mystery is a contract: every clue the reader notices has to lead somewhere. NovelGPT is an AI mystery writer, and an AI thriller writer too, that tracks each setup to its payoff and keeps a record of who knows what at every point in the story.

How it works

  1. Choose your kind of crime

Pick the Cozy mystery, Psychological thriller or Noir Quick start, or describe the book in a sentence. Thriller, Mystery and Crime Fiction are separate genres, each with its own subgenres, point of view and typical length.

  2. Cast the suspects

Give each person what they want, what they wrongly believe and what they fear. Then describe how each pair stands: who holds the power, and what stands between them.

  3. Plant promises

Add each clue, red herring and setup as a promise to the reader, with the chapter where it should pay off. Story memory also spots hooks, foreshadowing and mysteries as it reads.

  4. Set the timeline

Put the crime and the alibis on the Timeline in story time, then plan the chapters in the order readers will meet them. Flashbacks link back to the moment they belong.

  5. Draft and check

Draft with the AI or by hand. The AI is told what must not be revealed yet, and the consistency check quotes both passages when two chapters disagree.

Clues and red herrings: every setup tracked to its payoff

In a fair-play mystery the reader should be able to solve the case, and in a thriller every reveal should feel earned. Both depend on setup and payoff, which an AI mystery writer must track, because they are easy to lose across eighty thousand words. The Promises tab shows each promise as an arc from the chapter that sets it up to the chapter that pays it off: open ones dashed, paid ones solid, and overdue ones flagged.

A red herring can sit on the same board as the real clue, with its own payoff chapter, so you always know where it gets explained away. Story memory sorts what it spots into hooks, foreshadowing, mysteries, promises and side stories, and you can edit, reopen or drop any of them.

Who knows what, and when: the engine of a whodunit

A plot twist falls flat when a character acts on something they have not learned yet. As it reads each chapter, story memory records the facts that matter to a crime: where each person is, whether they are alive, dead, missing or away, who they have met, what they hold and know, and who learned each reveal. NovelGPT can then work out the state of the story at the start of any chapter.

Drafting uses the same record. Before the AI writes a chapter it is given the people in the scene with what they know, and a list headed Don't reveal yet: secrets recorded in later chapters and promises you planned to pay off later. The free checks also flag a person who appears after they left the story, and events that run out of order in story time, at no cost.

Tension and plot twist pacing on the Book map

The Book map shows every chapter at a glance, with the acts, your key moments, whose eyes each chapter is in and a tension rating from one to five. A twist lands harder after a stretch of calm, and a thriller that never lets up wears a reader out. Suggest tension proposes a value for every chapter, and nothing is saved until you tick it.

Pick a story shape that suits the book. The Fichtean Curve builds one crisis on another, which suits a thriller, while the Seven-Point Structure gives you a midpoint and two pinch points to plan around. Drag chapters into a new order on the map and the numbers follow.

Questions writers ask

Can AI plan a plot twist without cheating the reader?

It can suggest twists, but a fair one depends on clues planted earlier. Put each clue on the Promises board with its payoff chapter, and NovelGPT flags the overdue ones and quotes both passages if two chapters disagree about the facts.

What is the difference between a thriller and a mystery here?

They are separate genres. Mystery leans towards first person and about 80,000 words, thrillers towards close third and about 90,000, and subgenres such as Cozy Mystery, Psychological Thriller and Noir adjust the suggestions further.

Can the AI help me write a murder or a heist?

Fiction can go to dark places, and the AI will help within the acceptable-use rules. It will not write usable instructions for real-world harm, such as weapons or malware, dressed up as a story, and the AI providers have their own limits, so a request may occasionally be declined.

How does an AI mystery writer catch plot holes?

The consistency check goes through your chapters with a brief built from story memory and sorts what it finds into Must fix, Worth a look and Minor. Each finding quotes the two passages that disagree, so you can fix the right one.

Can I use it on a crime novel I have already started?

Yes. Bring in a Word, text or PDF file and NovelGPT works out where your chapters start. The AI can then read them into story memory and propose your people, places, plot and timeline, which you approve one step at a time.
