A step-by-step guide

How to write a book with AI, from idea to EPUB

You can write a book with AI and still be its author, as long as you decide where the AI helps. This guide walks through the stages from first idea to finished EPUB in NovelGPT, and what to check before you publish on Amazon KDP.

Step by step

  1. Decide what you want from the AI

Choose a level before you start: plan only, plan and draft with AI, or write every word yourself with the AI as a reader. NovelGPT supports all three, and you can change your mind chapter by chapter.

  2. Start with one sentence

Type your premise on Home and read the proposal for genre, length, story shape, voice and readers. Edit any line. Creating the book from it costs nothing.

  3. Build the story setup

Work down the four setup steps: People, Places & world, Plot, then the Chapter plan. Each arrives as a proposal, so you keep what works and change what does not.

  4. Draft, or write by hand

In the chapter editor, Draft this chapter streams a chapter from your plan. If you would rather type, start writing in the same editor. Mix the two as you like.

  5. Read every AI change

Changes to existing text arrive as suggestions, and new AI text is highlighted with Undo and Keep buttons. Read it the way an editor would, and cut what is not yours.

  6. Check the whole book

Run the free checks, then a consistency check that quotes both passages when a detail contradicts an earlier one. Fix what matters; mark deliberate choices as intentional.

  7. Add a cover and front pages

Design a cover, then add a title page, dedication, acknowledgments or an author note in Book parts. Eighteen kinds of front and back pages are available.

  8. Export

Save an EPUB, a DOCX in standard manuscript format, a PDF, Markdown or plain text from Publish, Export.

Can AI write a book? What it does well, and where you stay the author

Yes, AI can produce the draft of a book. The better question is whether the result is good and still yours. AI is strong at structure, first drafts, spotting continuity slips and the tedious reshuffling of a plan. It is weak where a book needs a point of view: what the story is for, what you want a reader to feel, which details are true to your experience.

So to write a book with AI well, the author's work is choices: the premise, the cast, which turning points matter, what to cut and what the voice sounds like. NovelGPT keeps those with you. Nothing generates until you tap, every AI action shows a price first, and any chapter can be written by hand. You own every word, AI-written text included, and what you write is never used to train AI models.

Publish a book written with AI on Amazon KDP

KDP's content guidelines separate AI-generated content from AI-assisted content. They define AI-generated content as text, images and more created by an AI-based tool, and say it stays AI-generated even after substantial edits. KDP asks you to tell it about AI-generated content when you publish a new book or republish an edited one.

Content you wrote yourself, with AI only helping you edit, refine or error-check it, or to brainstorm, is described as AI-assisted, and KDP says you need not disclose it. Which label fits your book is for you to judge against KDP's current wording. This guide is not legal advice and the rules can change, so read them before you publish. If you use an AI-made cover image, NovelGPT's export card reminds you that stores like KDP ask for that disclosure.

Export to EPUB and other formats

EPUB 3 is the usual format for ebook stores. The DOCX follows standard manuscript format, with Times New Roman at 12 point, double spacing and one-inch margins, for submissions. PDF, Markdown and plain text are there too. A cover you designed goes into the EPUB and the PDF.

Before you export, read the book as a reader would. Reading mode shows it like an ebook from the cover, one page at a time, and ends on 'To be continued' until every planned chapter has text.

Questions writers ask

Do I have to disclose AI use when I publish?

That depends on the store or publisher and on how you used AI. Amazon KDP asks for disclosure of AI-generated content and says AI-assisted content need not be disclosed. Other stores, publishers and competitions have their own rules, so check each one's current guidelines.

Is a book written with AI still my book?

NovelGPT's terms say that, as between you and NovelGPT, you own your writing and the text the AI produces for you, and that you may publish and sell it. They do not settle what any law or store says about AI-assisted work, and publishing decisions remain yours.

How long does it take to write a book with AI?

It depends on how much you want to shape. Each setup step takes a few minutes, but reviewing and revising is where most of the time goes. A fixed schedule helps, and the 30-day plan is one way to build it.

Which AI model should I use for a book?

You can set one model for planning, another for writing and a quicker one for small fixes, and change them at any time. The Free plan can use Claude Haiku 5.5 and GPT-6 Luna, while a paid plan or purchased credits open every model and every effort level.
